The setting doesn’t really affect the mood at all. The
setting of the book is mostly at school and home, but the main problem is the
main character’s brother has cancer. I don’t think that the mood would be any
different if the setting was in Kansas or if it was in New York, cancer will
make everybody sad no matter where they are. The only way that the setting
could possibly make a change in the mood would be if they were somewhere where
there wasn’t very good or even any treatment to cancer. Then the mood would
change.
Sure, the setting is the town, but the setting is also the type of family atmosphere that Steven lives in...what if the family had been abusive? How about a family that was wealthy and spent so much time working that they never talked??
